About the Books
When I was in third grade in Alexandria, Virginia, I possessed a serious deficiency in "foot-hand-eye" coordination. The game was kick ball... but it was not my hour. I skimmed every ball that was ever rolled to me and couldn't run fast. OUT!! OUT!! and out again! I couldn't catch the ball either. My classmates taunted me and told me time and time again how horrible I was. None of them wanted me on their team. The teacher had to force them to take me. I was always the last picked.
The sad part was I believed them. All that mattered to me was being like the other boys and being able to kick the ball and get on base... and maybe getting a run at least once in my third-grade career. I would even have been satisfied to stop the ball when it was kicked to me. My self-confidence was "0".
During this same time period I discovered the Hardy Boy Books. Something magical happened. I imagined myself as the younger brother to Frank and Joe and watched breathlessly as they overcame difficult and dangerous situations during their adventures. I began imagining myself being capable of successfully handling my own adventures. Finally, somewhere, within my heart, a knowledge was born that I could accomplish anything just like the Hardy Boys could.
Giving youth hope in a complicated world...helping them see that there is nothing that they cannot accomplish if they sacrifice, learn, work and believe as they overcome the obstacles that confront them daily.
